I've printed out Sample 3: Events.

What are Events? What are they supposed to do for me. How do I add them onto a page? What are they for?

As jweb said I suggest you to read some intros to HTML language.
You can associate definite situations (called events) to actions.
For example you can hide an object when you click on it with the mouse; or move it when you go over a picture...
You can launch a script by clicking a part of label and so on...
