I understand there will be a PayPal interface in v4.0... would it be possible for you to give some details of the interface? I need to know whether or not your interface will allow me to generate a GUID using PHP... (I have a requirement to send a registration code upon successful PayPal payment).

No, PayPal eCommerce tools don't permit users to create Guid (as I know) after registration.
There is the ability to redirect the PayPal site to a page of your site after the payment. Maybe you can make the code in PHP into this page.
